Your information

Last updated 22 September 2026

The Passenger is an app of interviews recorded in cars, made by Apps People Pty Ltd (“we”, “us”) in Australia. This policy explains what we collect, why, who we share it with, and what you can do about it. We handle personal information under the Australian Privacy Principles in the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).

The short version: watching needs no account and we don’t track you. If you take part, we keep what it takes to arrange an interview safely and to publish it. We don’t sell anything about you, and we don’t show ads.

If you only watch

You don’t need an account and we don’t ask who you are. Our servers see the address your phone connects from, as every server does, and keep it briefly for security. If you report an interview, we keep your report and the address it came from so we can deal with misuse.

What we collect when you sign in

WhatWhy
Mobile numberTo sign you in with a texted code. Nobody else on the app ever sees it.
Date of birthThe app is for people 18 and over.
First name and email, if you give themTo send one welcome email and the occasional update, and to fill in your forms. Optional, and you can remove them any time.
Your phone’s notification addressTo send notifications about your own interviews, if you allow them.
A key made by your iPhone’s App AttestTo check sign-in requests come from the real app, which stops people running up our text bills. It says nothing about who you are.
Sign-in recordsWhen codes were asked for, from which internet address, to stop abuse.

If you’re interviewed (a guest)

If you interview people (a creator)

Your location

During an interview the dash uses the iPhone’s location to keep the picture dark within 250 metres of the meeting point. That happens on the phone. Your location is not sent to us or stored.

Who we share it with

We use a small number of services to run the app. They handle information only on our behalf:

A published interview is public: anyone can watch it, with the guest’s first name, the place and the topics. Beyond that we share personal information only when the law requires it, or to protect someone’s safety.

How long we keep it

We keep your account while you use it. Sign-in codes expire after 10 minutes and are cleared regularly. Recordings and published interviews are kept as described in the guest release and the creator agreement. If an interview is taken down, it stops being shown straight away.

Seeing, fixing or deleting your information

You can change your profile, email and details in the app. To get a copy of what we hold about you, correct it, or delete your account, email hello@thepassenger.app from the address on your account, or with the mobile number you sign in with, and we’ll reply within 30 days. Deleting your account removes your profile and messages. A published interview you took part in is governed by the guest release, but we will always take one down if it shows where someone lives, involves someone under 18, puts someone at risk, or is harassment.

Keeping it safe

Information is encrypted in transit and at rest, stored in Australia, and only reachable by our servers and the people who run The Passenger. Sign-in codes and session tokens are stored only as hashes.

Children

The Passenger is for people 18 and over. If you think someone under 18 has an account or appears in an interview, tell us and we’ll remove it.

Questions or complaints

Email hello@thepassenger.app. If you’re not happy with our answer, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.

If we change this policy, we’ll update the date above and, for anything significant, tell you in the app first.
